The poem "Seven Ages of Man" is part of William Shakespeare's comedy "As You Like It." It is a speech given by Jacques, a philosopher, to Duke Senior.

Characteristics in the poem The Seven Ages-

  • In the first stage of his life, man appears in the world as a child. In the next stage of his life, man appears in the world as a child. He walks to school with a bag slung over his shoulder.
  • A man plays the role of a lover in the third stage of his life. He matures into a young man with many desires, ambitions, and dreams.
  • In the fourth stage of his life, man transforms into a foul-mouthed soldier who has learned obscene words. At this stage, he attempts to give himself a formidable appearance by growing a beard like a part.
  • He becomes a judge in the fifth stage of his life. In his thoughts, he matures and gains experience.
  • Then, in his sixth stage of life, man becomes old. In his movements, he appears quite ridiculous. He wears glasses because his vision is poor. His shoes become too big for him. His voice suffers a change. It transforms into a shrill, quivering whistle.
  • However, in the final stage, the man transforms back into a child. He appears to have forgotten everything. He loses his teeth. His vision is deteriorating, and he has lost his sense of taste. He is prepared to depart from this world.

Shakespeare depicts the seven stages of man's life with satire and cynicism. Shakespeare has used great economy of words to describe each stage of the man's life. He describes the various stages of life using living and concrete images.
