- All living beings have consciousness. They are aware of the changes taking place in the environment around them. They react and adapt to these changes for survival.
- Example: A rat senses the change in weather conditions and prepares itself for hibernation or winter sleep.
- Out of all the living organisms, only humans have self-consciousness i.e. they are also aware of their bodies. They are aware of their physical and mental state.
- It is due to this characteristic that humans have built such a huge civilization.
- Some animals like dolphins and chimpanzees do show signs of self-consciousness but these are still under research.
