What charges will the following elements gain when they obtain an octet of valence electrons?

Answer:

Potassium has 1 valence electron, to attain octet it will donate one electron. So it will gain +1 charge as it looses 1 electron of -1 charge to complete its octet.

Bromine, being a halogen, has 7 electrons in valence shell. It will gain one electrons hence -1 charge to complete octet.

Magnesium has 2 valence electrons, it donates them to gain +2 charge and complete octet.

Silicon has 4 valence electrons, it can either gain or lose 4 electrons to complete octet. It prefers to share electrons and hence can either have +4 or -4 or 0 charge.
