The long term cause was that many prominent Indian Nationalists were disappointed that India had not been given Dominion status by Britain after WW1.The Swaraj Party was dedicated to achieving self rule in India for and by Indians.

The immediate cause was the Chauri Chaura Incident of 5 February 1922,when a non-cooperation protest (part of a campaign to gain self rule in India) turned violent, resulting in the deaths of 3 civilians and 23 policemen.Appalled by the deaths,Gandhi called for an end to the Non-cooperation movement - something other Indian nationalist leaders did not agree with.

The end result was the formation of the Swaraj Party.
