The expression has been taken from the Shakespearean play "Merchant of the Venice."

Explanation:

  • When Antonio asks Hylock for the loan and tells him that he will return, Shylock replies, " if Antonio fails to repay the loan within the specified time, Shylock will have the right to cut a "pound of flesh" from any part of Antonio's body."
  • Bassanio stops Antonio to make such a dangerous deal but Antonio does it anyway.
