Following were the reasons that compelled Louis Sixteenth to raise taxes in France.

1) Political Reasons :-

a) The royal treasury of France had become empty due to the long years of wars fought by the royal army. The wars had drained the financial resources of France.
b) The cost of maintenance of the immense palace of Versailles had mecome very high. Also the maintenance cost of army, government offices and court was continuously becoming high.
c) Under the reign of Louis Sixteenth, France had helped thirteen British Colonies in America to gain independence that in turn had increased the royal debt.

Economic Reasons :-

a) High interest was charged by the lenders on state loans.
b) Regular expenses could not be avoided.
c) There were unequal and unfair distribution of taxes on the three Estates had reduced the state's income.
