Answer:

Indians eat the second smallest amount of meat per person per year(4.4 kg). Even though only 30% of people are vegetarian, very few of the others eat meat regularly. Most communities have customs to eat vegetarian during certain times of the year.

India makes vegetarianism easy. And it works. Most grocery shops sell no meat. Packaged products are marked with a green for vegetarian, brown for products with eggs and red for products with meat. And since getting a red dot on your product means it will not be consumed by a large section of the population, most companies try to avoid meat in their products. While in other countries eating vegetarian would be a conscious effort, in most Indian cities, eating meat would be a conscious effort. For around 3 years, I was vegetarian. I didn't sit down one day and decide to do that, it wasn't an exercise in self control. It just……happened.

So what?

Well, if we want people to make better choices, instead of blaming individuals, we should build systems and cultures that incentivize good choices.

Instead of “encouraging” individuals to eat healthy, make it easier and cheaper to do so. Stop telling people to go zero waste, instead, make everyday products and purchases packaging free. If you want people to report crimes, instead speed up legal proceedings.(seriously, no one has 10–15 years and thousands of rupees, for a minor case)

Same goes for every little “choice”. As cgp grey would put it,” wishing on a star that people were better is never a good solution
