Answer:

Abstract:

Provides conclusions and recommendations for research and interventions to address gender differentials in Maldives, which presents a classic case of a relatively prosperous country where gender inequalities in basic wellbeing (health and education) prove largely diminished but where other social and cultural restrictions on women’s abilities to make choices for their lives persist. Furthermore, repeated surveys from 2005 and 2011 demonstrate that public support for gender equality and women’s rights appears on the decline. Recommendations include (1) maintaining a permanent ministry or department of gender, and increasing the capacity of government staff to mainstream gender issues across sectors and ministries; (2) bolstering women’ s political participation; (3) targeting specific constraints affecting women’s mobility, property ownership, and credit access; (4) engaging with the youth to support their inclusion in a changing society; (5) supporting integrated public health programs; (6) increasing female employment in high-growth and high-employment sectors; and (7) mitigating women’s vulnerability to gender-based violence (GBV).
