After an organism's soft tissues decay in sediment, the hard parts — particularly the bones — are left behind. Water seeps into the remains, and minerals dissolved in the water seep into the spaces within the remains, where they form crystals.

The two most important conditions which favour the preservation of fossils are:-

  1. Possession of hard part-After the death of the organisms, the soft parts are generally easily decomposed. Therefore, animals like jelly fish and insects are not ordinarily preserved.
  2. Immediate Burial-If the animals and plants are not buried quickly after their death,they are likely to be destroyed by chemical decay and other agencies of erosion.
