- Mahatma Gandhi was the leader who lead India towards Independence. India was under the rule of British for around 250 years.
- The Champaran agitation in Bihar was Gandhi's first involvement into Indian freedom politics. The farmers were being forced to grow Indigo and were being tortured if they rebelled. They sought Gandhi's help and through a non-violent protest, Gandhi managed to win concessions from the authority.
- Gandhi realized that the British had been able to be in India only because of the co-operation they had been receiving from the Indians. After this he called for a non-cooperation movement.
