Rani Lakshmibai actually fought for herself not for freedom of India.
She fought for her son Damodar Rao and for his rights,who was supposed to be the next heir of the throne.
But,the problem here was that he was adopted and not her real son.Therefore,the state was annexed under the guideline of Doctrine of lapse.Acquiesce to the doctrine of lapses which was divised by Lord Dalhousie -an annexation policy any princely state which comes under the paramountancy of East India Company and if the ruler of the state dies without any male heir or ill treat the state than the kingdom will be annexed by East India Company.
Many other states were also annexed under this policy and Jhasi became a prey for The Company.
For the recognition of Damodar Rao as the next Grantee of the throne she fought against the company.
When the fort was besieged by British army than surely she said that this fight is for freedom but not struggle for freedom of India
