Amanda’s life is full of nagging and instructions from her mother. She secretly wishes to be a mermaid, so that she could be alone, ‘the sole inhabitant’ of the sea. Also, she feels that the sea would offer her the right kind of atmosphere, where she could be relaxed and happy, as indicated by the words ‘languid’ and ‘blissfully’.  Amanda imagines herself to be a mermaid who is ‘drifting’ without any worries or stress.
