When carbon dioxide is passed through the limewater solution it forms calcium carbonate (limescale), which is insoluble. This causes thesolution to turn misty. The white cloudy colour occurs by passage ofCO2 through lime water is due to CaCO3 .This reaction is used as a indicator for carbon dioxide.
