In Alpha Ray scattering experiment conducted by Ernest Rutherford, gold foil was taken instead of any other metal because he wanted at least a ray to pass through, while other metals couldn't do that and there could have been complete reboundness. When the experiment was conducted, almost 99% of the days were deflected at several angles, while only some passed through, this gave me an idea that there could be a possibility of presence of some positive centre.
