When a cell is in hypotonic condition it swells but when a cell is in a hypertonic condition it shrinks. Because when the cell is in hypotonic condition it has higher water content in it and becomes a hypotonic solution whereas in hypertonic solution it shrinks due to less water content and becomes a hypertonic solution.

hey here is your answer
Explanation:
HYPOTONIC SOLUTION--it is a solution whose concentration is less than that of cell sap.
If the cell is kept in hypotonic solution it increases in size
HYPERTONIC SOLUTION-- it is a solution whose concentration is more than that of cell sap.
If the cell is kept in hypotonic solution it shrinks.
Hope it helps............
