Earth’s axis is a tilted one making an angle of 23.5 degrees with its plane of orbit. By that, it is also a fact that, our earth’s orbit is an elliptical one.

Tilt in axis is a necessity for existence of life on earth. It is also due to its elliptical orbit that along with tilt in axis -the duo- in consonance gives fillip to our occurance of seasons.

Let me make it simple from above figure.

The arctic pole and antarctic poles are two places that receive sunlight although for some time, only due to earth’s tilt, earth if wouldn’t have been tilted, the entire sunlight would have concentrated on the bulged area, the rest of earth (arctic and antarctic) would have been far from receiving any sunlight. This would have attributed to more harsher conditions on earth to survive. Like the existence of life which today is a distributed one, would have confined to a narrow belt in an area that would regularly come in to contact with the sunlight.

Further a monotonous nature of season would be a result with no tilt on axis as continents today are arranged in such a manner that makes it difficult for sunlight to reach every nook and corner of earth, thanks also to the shape of earth!

Elliptical orbit and a tilted axis ensure that each and every corner of earth receives sunlight at regular interval. Imagine a condition where in arctic if sun never shines with its current geographical location, and simultaneously imagine a condition in Equatorial region which would be constantly receiving sunlight, life would have been difficult, or rather i must add atleast impossible to exist at once in arctic and antarctic regions as today is! The existence of life on earth has been possible only when several factors combined to give an optimum condition that were needed to nurture life, earth’s tilt on its axis is one such factor.

Thus the tilt is a necessity for earth to receive sunlight regularly at every corner along its non-edge structure and help sustain life on earth. With its absence along with several other factors, earth would be no different than other terrestrial planets of our solar system.
