Answer:

Explanation:

The Deputies of the Third Estate which included both the lower clergy and commoners met on an indoor tennis court, the Jeu de Paume in Versailles, France to show their defiance against King Louis XVI’s directive of dispersal.

During the morning of June 20th 1789 the deputies of the newly formed National Assembly assembled to enter the Hôtel des Menus-Plaisirs at Versailles. To their surprise they found the door of the meeting hall locked and were also heavily guarded by the royal troops. Sensing this  move as an uncalled for by King  Louis XVI, the deputies moved to the next available place, Versailles’ indoor tennis courts.

The 577 deputies assembled on the court and took an oath which was drafted by Emmanuel Sieyes and administered by Jean-Sylvain Bailly. They pledged to assemble together till such time, a new national constitution is drafted and implemented.

This swearing on the Tennis Court became one of the most exemplary event of the French Revolution.

Hope this helps.
