Lord dalhousie annexed Awadh in 1856. People resented this since the Nawabs of Awadh had always been loyal to the british. The annexation was seen as an act of betrayal and back stabbing by the british.It deeply hurt the sentiments of the people ,particularly the sepoys,because most of them were from Awadh.
