When Mr. Otis had made up his mind to purchase Canterville Chase, Lord Canterville, the owner of the Chase tired his best to dissuade Mr. Otis from buying the Chase. He plainly said it was haunted. He gave many details of incidents that proved it was haunted. He said they had not cared to live in the place themselves since his grandaunt, the Dowager Duchess of Bolton, was frightened into a fit, from which she never really recovered, by two skeleton hands being placed on her shoulders as she was dressing for dinner.  He asserted the ghost had been seen by several living members of his family, as well as by the rector of the parish, the Rev. Augustus Dampier, who is a Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. After the unfortunate accident to the Duchess, none of their younger servants would stay with them, and Lady Canterville often got very little sleep at night, in consequence of the mysterious noises that came from the corridor and the library.

This act of giving honest explanation and telling the ghostly truth about the Chase before the finalizing of the purchase reveals Lord Canterville was an honest and man of high principles. He did not want to cheat Mr. Otis by keeping him in dark about the Chase’s macabre reality.
