The direction of motion of an object at any point in space is determined by its instantaneous velocity at that point. The acceleration is a measure of the change of velocity in unit time at that point which need not be in the same direction as the direction of the motion of the object. If a force is applied on a moving object, acceleration would be in the direction of the applied force and not in the direction of the original direction of the motion of the object.
