Anne is an insightful strong willed adolescent. I think beyond these qualities she is also an average teenage girl trying to cope with coming of age. Anne has the usual mother adolescent daughter / mother conflicts. These are magnified because of the close quarters they live in all the time, "Margot’s and Mother’s personalities are so alien to me. I understand my girlfriends better than my own mother. Isn’t that a shame? " As the diary evolves, so does anne's identity. Anne begins to see the world for what it is and how her life fits into the bigger picture of things.
