The East India Company came as a trading Company in India during the Mughal Period. The Company first get a farman (royal decree) issued by Jahangier to set up a factory at Surat and concessions in trade.

Later in 1691, Aurangzeb issued another farman granting right to duty free trade to East India Company in Bengal. The Company was free to trade in Bengal without any duties or taxes. The farmans was later misused by the Company which lead to conflict between Company and Nawabs of Bengal and ultimately establishment of Company rule in India
