The excerpt has been taken from the story Oliver Twist, written by Charles Dickens. In the story, Nancy is a soft girl who wishes well for everyone and Sikes is her lover who is a violent and greedy criminal.
After an old master criminal tricks Sikes into believing that even Nancy complained about him and revealing him, Sikes is furious with her and after he returns home after committing a burglary, he thrashes her to death. Her blood splatters all over the room and also, on his clothes.
He then washes off the blood stains and his clothes also. He cuts off pieces of his clothes which have the blood stains on it and which could not be washed and burns them.
