The British gained both territorially and financially through the system of the subsidiary alliance.

If any Indian ruler accepting the subsidiary alliance with the British
It had to keep the British army within their territory and was supposed to pay for its maintenance. In lieu of his payments, the state would be delivered to the British.
By this system, it annexed Hyderabad, Gwalior, Indore, Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Oudh.
