The last Lesson : Alphonse Daudet

The lesson is set against the backdrop of the Franco Prussian war in which France was defeated . It deals with the affects it had on life in school.

Question : What did Hamel Announce? How did his words sound to the narrator?

Answer : Mr. Hamel announced that it was going to be there last French lesson as France has been defeated in the Franco Prussian war . Hence , an order had come from Berlin that only German will be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine . Thus, M. Hamel was to leave the country as there new teacher would arrive the following day.

These words sounded like an attack to the narrator as he would be now denied the right to learn his own language .

It aroused his feelings of patriotism and love for his mother land
