Har Gobind Khorana's early work was on biochemistry of enzymes, but in the 1960's, he turned to nucleic acids and the genetic code. He determined the sequence of the nucleic acids for each of the amino acids in the human body. His work on nucleotide synthesis at Wisconsin was a major contribution to the science of the genetic code.
