When Miss Stoner signals to Holmes and Watson that she was going to her old bedroom, they snuck into the house and occupied the room where Helen usually slept.
- The three characters suspected Dr. Roylott as a foul person when they realized that in their mother's will, the sisters would take up their inheritance if they got married. By putting Miss SToner in her sister's room she would meet the same fate as Dr. Roylott who gets the inheritance as a form of 'pittance'.
- Holmes and Watson spent hours in a silent vigil until they hear Dr. ROylott moving about with the light of a lantern. After hearing a deadly cry they found that the doctor had been bitten by a deadly snake and died immediately. The snake was the titular Speckled Band which had killed Miss Stoner's sister several years ago.
- After the death of her stepfather, Helen was free to marry and receive her rightful inheritance.
- Originally, Holmes believed that the Speckled Band was a band of gypsies who were known by the doctor. Holmes found out that the wicked stepfather replaced a dummy bell rope with the venomous snake which bit Miss Stoner's sister and killed her.
