• The three characters suspected Dr. Roylott as a foul person when they realized that in their mother's will, the sisters would take up their inheritance if they got married. By putting Miss SToner in her sister's room she would meet the same fate as Dr. Roylott who gets the inheritance as a form of 'pittance'.
