What did John Forster mean when he said that Dickens made 'characters real
existences, not by describing them but by letting them describe themselves'?

Answer: I believe he meant that Dickens did not define his character, he allowed them to express themself, that he only brought out the life in them. Dickens seemingly guided the characters he did not control them, I think it's vastly gorgeous how real the characters feel, and how Dickens had allowed the characters to connect with one another and the rest of the world. I suspect John indicated the same.
