Lencho, the protagonist, had an unwavering faith in God. Formerly, he was in crisis as the hailstorm devastated his maize field. He wanted a hundred pesos to make his situation normal so he started a correspondence with God. And that letter was read by the postmaster. He was an amiable fat man. He laughed at first but he wanted to help Lencho. So he gave a part of his salary, asked for help from his friends for sake of charity. Atlast, he collected a sum of 70 pesos and replied back to him writting "God" only. The next Sunday, he came early and saw that there were only seventy pesos in the letter.

He wasn't surprised rather he was angry. He wrote another letter insulting the post office employees as bunch of crooks as he thought that the rest thirty pesos were stolen by them.
