Mr Hamel, was a french school teacher who had taught the narrator for the past 40 years. But due to the Prussian - Franco War, the continents of Alsace and Lorraine become Prussian Territories which were imposed with german language. Hence Mr Hamel, being a french teacher had to leave the continent. Due to this he had called all of them and took his last lesson. Due to utmost sincerity and Patriotism, he couldn't stay still and hence wrote:
"Vive Le France" meaning "Long Live France"
