Strange as it may seem given the nature of subsequent events, Mrs. Hall is initially quite happy to see Griffin arrive at the Coach and Horses inn. It is early February in the very depth of a cold, biting winter. This is not the time of year Mrs. Hall would normally expect to welcome any paying guests to the inn. maybe this can help

Mrs hall showed her gratitude for her good fortune by lighting a fire and leaving the stranger comfortable by the fireside while she went to prepare him a meal with her own hands to show her worthy of good fortune she was trying to talk to stranger again and again but stranger was snubbing her....
