Sam is an incredibly resourceful boy, and he enjoys setting hard challenges for himself and then overcoming them. There are many examples where he takes pleasure in solving a problem or anticipating and providing for a need. His first fire, for example, was "magic," and part of the magic comes from knowing that he is capable of looking after himself. When he finds the spring next his hemlock tree, Sam accidentally discovers crayfish!
"I did get pinched, but I had my dinner. And that was the first time I had planned ahead! Any planning I did in those early days was such a surprise to me and so successful that I was delighted with even a small plan."
In general, Sam is most pleased with his hollow tree home and his success in creating a little homestead out in the woods. He takes great pleasure in the deer skin door he makes for his home, for example. It is a little ironic, however, that all his work to create a safe and livable house attracts visitors and effectively ends his solitary adventure in the woods. As he says when Matt and Bando build a guesthouse: "A guesthouse meant I was no longer a runaway. I was no longer hiding in the wilderness. I was living in the woods like anyone else lives in a house." Perhaps the thing Sam is most pleased with is coming full circle: he leaves his crowded apartment only to create his own household, on his own terms.
Interesting question! In the book My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George, Sam (the narrator) accomplishes numerous impressive endeavors. However, he seems especially pleased with himself when he makes his deerskin door and deerskin pants.
Beginning with the deerskin door, Sam utilizes the door to protect himself from the weather and from other humans. With the deerskin door, the door blends in with Sam’s tree. As a result, people fail to recognize that Sam lives in the tree, which quite pleases Sam. As the text shows:
“All this time sitting and talking with me, and he had not seen the entrance to my tree. I was pleased.”
Subsequently, Sam was also quite excited when he made himself deerskin pants. As Sam’s clothes began to wear thin, Sam realizes that he should make deerskin pants. Sam spent numerous hours creating his new pants. However, after he finishes, he is quite proud of himself. As the text reveals:
“They fit well, and were the best-looking pants I had ever seen. I was terribly proud of them.”
Consequently, Sam accomplishes numerous impressive achievements in the wilderness. However, he seems especially proud of his creations with deerskin. He is exceedingly proud of his deerskin pants and is quite pleased with his deerskin door.
