Jawaharlal Nehru did a wonderful job as a Prime Minister of India under the circumstances. In those turbulent times he kept his sanity and fought hardliners to make India a secular democracy. At that time people said India is not ready for democracy. He played a major role in the formation of modern and secular democratic constitution for India. Lots of people were strongly resisting a democratic constiution where women had equal rights. It seems very common now but those days it was a tremendously complicated task.
He worked with Mahatma Gandhi for many long years to get independence from British colonial rule. He joined Congress in 1919 and went to jail many times during civil disobedience movement. He spent more than a decade in prison and took all the hardships of prison while he could easily be living comfortable life.
His commitment to democracy and secularism has helped India remain a modern secular democracy and did not get pulled in by communal forces generated by some, who neither believed in democracy not secularism. He was the main secular force in Congress to select Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as the first law minister of India.
