On the day of the inaugural ceremony, Nelson Mandela was filled with a sense of history. He remembered how brave men sacrificed their lives for freedom and he says that he felt like he was simply the sum of all those African patriots. He also recalls how during the first decade of the 20th century, the White people patched up their differences and erected a system of racial discrimination against the Black people of their own land. He says it was the harshest and most inhumane form of discrimination.

He was overwhelmed by a sense of history on that day. After the Anglo-Boer war, the whites in South Africa erected a system of racial discrimination. A black man who tried to live like a human being was punished and isolated. This was called the Apartheid regime. However, this had another unintended side effect, that is, it created the Chief Luthulis, Oliver Tambos, Bram Fischers, Yusuf Dadoos, men of great courage and perseverance. He simply thought of himself as all those African patriots before and he grieved at the fact that he couldn't thank them and they couldn't see what their efforts brought.
