He became a crusader for the cause of downtrodden in Tamil Nadu and campaigned against ritualism. He started self respect movement and distinguished himself as a prominent leader of the justice party, the name of which he later change to the dravida kazhagam . under his leadership a massive campaign was launch to organise marriages without the Brahmin priest . the primary objective of the dravida kazhagam was to champion the cause of the dravidian and socially backward castes and work for their upliftment.

It is reported that about 60% of the government jobs, were occupied by Brahmins in Tamilnadu at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Although they constituted only 3% of the Tamilnadu population.

This system was continued till independence. Periyar understood that it is due to the better scope of education, due to which  Brahmins avail position and power in the govt. Periyar fought for reservation for the backward classes in both education and jobs.

While other states followed supreme court judgment to observe reservation to less than 50%, DMK with increased it to 69%. DMK pursued Periyar’s policy of anti-Brahminism.

And pursuing the agenda of opposing Brahmin leadership in Congress.
