Portia wanted to marry Bassanio but she couldn't as her husband could only be chosen from the lottery of caskets.

Answer: Portia's father had devised a lottery system in which the person who choosed the correct casket could woo Portia.

But Portia loves Bassanio. She knows him since when he had visited father when he was alive. Portia liked him since that time. Even though she likes him she can't choose her own husband and will have to accept the results of the casket system.
