Raja Ram Mohan Roy supported the cause of upliftment of women and fought vigorously for them. He encouraged the ideas of women's education and widow remarriage. He strongly opposed child marriage, polygamy and sati system. In 1829,the inhuman practice of sati was abolished by Lord William Bentinck largely due to the efforts of Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
