Rajkumar Shukla was an emaciated and poor peasant from Champaran, Bihar. In the session of Annual Congress Party at Lucknow, he came to meet Gandhi to complain about the cruelties of the brutal landlord system that was prevailing in Bihar at that time. He met Gandhi, oriented himself and asked him to come to his village to help the poor people, who were living as sharecroppers. Gandhi informed him about his upcoming appointments in Kanpur and different sections of India. However, Rajkumar followed him everywhere and begged to settle a date concerning visitation to Champaran. Gandhi was immensely impressed by his courage and dedication. Months passed by, as Gandhi was busy in meetings that were organized in different states. Finally, Gandhi visited Rajkumar's village and got stunned by seeing the crowd waiting for him. Gandhi arrived at his village and started working for the welfare of sharecroppers, who were being exploited by the landlords.
