They believed that it was Rathnam's education which allowed him to imagine that he could start comparing himself with them.

Explanation:

Rathnam refused to wash the feet of the priests who came from the neighbouring villages to honour the local deity. Rathnam's family had been performing the task of washing the feet of the priest and then bathing with the same water which was used for washing the feet of the priests.

However, when it was Rathnam's turn to perform the task, he refused to do it out rightly because he had no faith in such practice and he believed  that his  family members were forced to perform this ritual just because  they belonged to a lower caste.  This angered and shocked the powerful castes of the village and they blamed the education system for making Rathman think that he could compare himself with them.
