"Saint Joan, Scene 1, opens in the year 1429, on a lovely spring morning. Characters Captain Robert de Baudricourt, Joan (a young girl) and Polly are introduced.

When Joan tells Robert that she wants to go to Orleans to break the siege, he is shocked and considers her to be a fool. She seeks his permission to take his soldiers with her.

This is when Robert calls Polly in, i.e. Bertrand de Poulengey, one of his soldiers and accuses him to want to accompany Joan because he wanted to have his with her under the pretence of taking her to Orleans.

Robert isn't awed with his Steward's comical inclination.

He continues to call his worker each awful name he can consider.

The Captain blames his worker for taking the eggs and pitching them to different criminals.

Robert is certain there's been burglary in light of the fact that there wasn't sufficient drain the day preceding.
