Tanaji Malusare, a trustworthy general of Shivaji & his brother Suryaji, deposed the Marthas to take over Kondhana (Sinhagad). The Mughal commandant Uday Bhan Rathod was at that time holding the fort.
- Tanaji took the Fort successfully, however, with about 300 troops, in the early hours of 4th February 1670. "A great number of people, led by Suryaji, remained hidden near the main gated door & Tanaji himself with his chosen followers scaled down the walls by means of an iguana & opened the doors, placing the few watchmen who came out in the sword to challenge him ... The fort was captured and Shivaji in Rajgad was given the message through a massive bonfire.
