Kalighat painting initiated in west Bengal of India. This type of artistic painting was practiced in the kali temples of west Bengal which later became a distinct school of art called Kalighat paintings. These were done on cloths. They depicted the conventional images of Goddesses.

Meanwhile British raj enabled the Indian artists to get exposed to European style of paintings. Calcutta school of arts attracted many foreigners to the city. Kalighat painting is a distinct school which trained professional painters who were famous in depicting the paintings of Goddess kali. It was painted specially for the Durga Puja festival.  

Kalighat artists were also famous for painting activities of everyday life. Their art form was simple and the use of vibrant colors attracted many who were interested in paintings.
