Why 'complex'? The year is 1885, and there wasn't as many options at today. The safe could have a possible 4-digit combination and/or a lock. The safe would be more secure if the date was after 2000, because technology is widely enhanced at that time.
It's not like it has a face/fingerprint lock on it, like the ones in sci-fi movies, obviously, as it's in the early, modern days of 1885.
