The boyish faces of the young children, Nicola and Jacopo, hid seriousness which was far beyond their age. They were very diligent with the work they did and didn't hesitate to do any kind of work that they were offered. The two brothers didn't disclose their plans to the author as they did not wanted any stranger to come across their problems and show pity on them. They were boys with high self esteem. The author did not speak to them to their return journey because he did not want to intrude into their secret and wanted the two boys to live with the idea that the narrator did not knew anything.
