Explanation:

British after 1857 revolution realized it and there were number of steps were taken to ensure a steady rule.

The most effective policy “divide and rule”

Established an organization (Congress) which appeared to be representative of Indians but actually worked for Brits’ agenda.

They brainwashed Indians by introducing English education and inducting them into lower administration jobs. This education also brought concept of India as a unified nation among common people.

Destorted ancient history and made Indians look to be inferior to westerners.

They also did lot of good by connecting the large country by rail and postal network. We remain greatly indebted to British for these two things. Out imcompetent politicians would never have been able to achieve that after independence.India is divers country, it is very difficult to gover without effective administrative machinery.

As for britishers, who are aliens to India, this made them, governing task was much harder. As sovereignty is important for every land.

Britishers used different methods to legitimise their rule for ease of governance.

They established archaeological survey of India,to study how India governed by their past rulers(to find out indigenous elements of administration)

The tried to introduce parliamentary for of government (like in uk) since 1773. This helped to mobilise resources efficiently.

Britishers started decentralising power after 1857 revolt. Indianisation of each part of administration, which helped for sharing power with indigenious people. With carrot and stick policy to divide emerging protesting section.

Britishers realised communication is the key, so they gave preference to railway, roads, telegraph etc.Which remained backbone of administration.

So Britishers,as per requirements of time changed their policies and planned their agenda ,to govern such huge empire
