This is from the story The Cobbler and the Fairies by Katharine Pyle.

The cobbler worked hard in his trade but still he did not seem to get his way with the world. So one day , he had cut the last pieces of leather that he had, so that he could make shoes out of it. He wouldn't have any money until he made and sold that pair of shoes.

But, when he went to check out his cut out leather pieces the next morning, he was surprised to see that somebody had already used the cut leather pieces and had made beautiful pair of shoes out of them. This pair was a better work than what the cobbler could have done.
