Answer:The end of the Mughal Empire in India was not all of a sudden, it was a gradual process.

The Mughal Empire had virtually come to end after the death of the last most influential Emperor, Aurangzeb, in 1707. His successor Bahadur Shah I was 64 years old when he became the king. He shortly died. The rest of the successors were puppets to Sayyid Brothers, who controlled them.

By the time Shah Jahan's reign was coming to an end, another small, but determined force arose in a small place in what today is Maharashtra: The Marathas.

After Aurangzeb's death, The Marathas grew considerably. They expanded northwards, north-westwards and even ventured to the eastern part of India. Such was their force, that the Mughal Emperor accepted their supremacy and was spared his kingship.

That was the time when the death knell of the Mughals had already been rung. The final blow was given by the British.

Many small independent kingdoms had risen, like Hyderabad, Mysore, Bengal etc. Who were previously loyal to the Mughals. The effect of the Marathas, soon started falling after late 1780’s. The British then slowly swallowed the whole subcontinent.

When the people became aware, and planned to destroy the roots of the British in India, through the revolt of 1857, the people turned to the Mughal Emperor as their ruler. The then ruling Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar was pressurised to take up this authority.

The revolt was quelled. The sons and grandsons of Bahadur Shah Zafar were shot before his own eyes. After seeing that the Mughals had revolted against the British, they tried the “Ruling Mughal” Bahadur Shah Zafar for treason and then sent to Rangoon.

He then spent the spent the remaining years of his life there, till death. The Mughal Empire thus, finally came to an end in 1858.
