What did the merchant do when donkey intentionally fell in to the stream to dissolve salt in water

Next day, he filled the bags with cotton (which when dipped in water becomes heavier)and the donkey was thinking that the bags were very light that day.But he ignored that thing.

Then as usual,when the river came ,the donkey sat into it and when he tried to get up so he was unable to do so.

Then the merchant laughed at him and this taught the donkey a lesson..
