It is said that the revolt was started due the coating of cow and pig's fat on the cardridge (bullet) for the Enfeild rifle. To load the gun it is required to tear and open the coating with once teeth which hurt the religious faith of Muslims and hindus. This lead to the revolt and that achieved is to save their religious faith.
