English poet, Edward James Hughes (1930 – 1998) penned the poetry, ‘The Laburnum Top’.
Like a masked bandit, the goldfinch was hidden among the thick leaves and beautiful flowers of the laburnum tree. As it came out and perched on the end of a branch, its ‘barred face identity mask’ was revealed.
The bird appears to wear a black mask, as goldfinch usually have a black marking on their yellow face.
